Kristofferson’s old friend and producer Fred Foster had incurred huge financial losses in a banking venture; consequently, both Monument and Combine recording studios faced bankruptcy. In 1982, in an effort to stem the tide of financial ruin and to show their appreciation to Foster, several former Monument artists joined together for a double-album compilation. Dolly Parton, Brenda Lee, Willie Nelson, and Kristofferson recorded The Winning Hand, an assortment of solos and duets involving new songs as well as old. Kristofferson sang seven duets and two solo songs. Among his duets are “Help Me Make It through the Night” with Brenda Lee, “Casey’s Last Ride” with Willie Nelson, and “Ping Pong” with Dolly Parton. His solos are “The Bandits of Beverly Hills,” and “Here Comes That Rainbow Again,” written with John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath in mind as a reminder to listeners of his concern for the oppressed. Johnny Cash wrote copious liner notes recalling Kristofferson’s arrival in Nashville back in 1965 and recounted his version of Kristofferson’s notorious stunt landing a helicopter in Cash’s yard in Nashville. All four artists appeared on a two-hour television special, hosted by Cash in 1983. The Winning Hand was quite successful, as it moved into the Country Top Five category.
Also in 1983, Kristofferson returned to Nashville for a weeklong celebration of his music, with Johnny Cash leading a special tribute at the Country Music Awards Show and singing a medley of Kristofferson classics with Anne Murray, Lee Greenwood, and Larry Gatlin. Later, Kristofferson gathered with old friends David Allan Coe, Roger Miller, Willie Nelson, and Mickey Newbury for a guitar pull; “It’s been a long time since I stayed up all night playing music,” he said, as quoted by Miller, “especially straight, so you remember what you did” (178).
Also in 1983, Kristofferson had been honored by a BMI, Broadcast Music Inc., banquet for five of his best-known songs that had accumulated over seven million airplays. Dressed in a tuxedo, he received standing ovations throughout the evening. He was looking much fitter than earlier and had become quite earnest about caring for Casey after the divorce, adopting the title of bachelor father. He had married again, this time to Lisa Meyers, an attorney he met in a Malibu gym. The ceremony took place on February 19, 1983, in the chapel at Pepperdine University, where Meyers had graduated.
In 1984, Kristofferson was finally able to move back into low-budget films and films for television. He accepted a part in a CBS movie, The Lost Honor of Kathryn Beck, a remake of the 1975 German film The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum, costarring Marlo Thomas as a woman who spends a night with a man with a shady past and as a result is harassed by the police and the press. The same year, Kristofferson participated in Flashpoint, directed by William Tannen, and also starring Rip Torn, Treat Williams, Tess Harper, and Roberts Blossom. The film concerns two border-patrol officers who discover an abandoned jeep full of money
